As Gibbins-Klein expressed, having goals of your own and striving to achieve them can inspire those around you to both envision, and work to obtain, new goals for themselves. Athletics provide an outlet in which the work of one student-athlete can provide a positive example for those around them. In being a constructive, hard-working, and uplifting member of a team, one can effectively display and instill the characteristics of a leader in those around them. As with instances within the work place, students also face the possibility of questioning both if and how they will morally handle situations to uphold their quality of integrity. Similarly to the situation that students are currently faced with in the world of academic endeavors, athletes are faced with incredibly high expectations and goals to achieve. Though this, in and of itself, is not an unfavorable situation, the stress that it puts on these student-athletes can drive them to consider destructive options in order to meet the standards that have been set for them. Leaders, and thus students in the Honors program would be challenged to resist the temptation of "easy ways out," such as steroids or other unwarranted means of achieving success within athletics. It is important for a student leader to understand and respect the varying views that are instilled in other students. A good leader does not segregate a group, but brings its members together to promote and support differences within them. In their everyday encounters on campus, an Honors student should advocate for universal acceptance and an overall improved sense of community by striving to see and share the advantages of a student body with diverse views. Having accepting and genial encounters with everyone around them, despite differences, promotes mirroring attitudes that surrounding students will be influenced by and hopefully adopt. By living with this accepting mindset toward others and treating all with dignity and respect, Honors program students would be living out their role as a leader to their peers and upholding views of integrity.
