A scout’s mindset is understanding what is happening and viewing different perspectives. A soldier’s mindset is the need to protect and defend ourselves from other enemies. In this case, those enemies are those who try to change our mind on what we believe in. She tells a story about a man named Alfred Dreyfus who was wrongfully convicted of a crime he did not commit, “It was discovered in 1894 by officers in the French general staff. It was torn up in a wastepaper basket, but when they pieced it back together, they discovered that someone in their ranks had been selling military secrets to Germany.” (01:38). The superiors of France were told that their secrets were still being given to Germany, but refuse to believe Dreyfus was innocent. It was a perfect example of “motivated reasoning” which is the motivation, wants, and fears format the way we interpret things. The superior officers did not want to be proven wrong that Dreyfus was innocent, which is why he was kept in jail for so long. People decide to stick with their thoughts and beliefs because they truly think they are correct and do not want to be proven wrong. That is what we call the soldier’s mindset. If we listen to other’s opinions and perspectives, we may feel enlightened and more educated. Questioning everything and looking for what is actually there is a great way to educate yourself and be more aware of the society. We may stick to our own beliefs, but we will only be living in ignorance. A soldier’s mindset is not a mindset to have if we want to explore what is actually out there. We should be more conscious of other’s perspectives and be considerate about it. We should accept the fact if we decide to listen to other’s opinions, we may be proven wrong of our own beliefs.
