Mindfulness In Law School Analysis

Law school is more so like a marathon then it is a sprint. With first semester completed and the first bend in the road being overcome it is important to assess how to continue the race and finish with vigor. After reading some portions of Mindfulness for Law Students by Scott Rogers I have come to realize that becoming mindful of one’s thoughts can be greatly beneficial. I do not believe mindfulness is something that should be done occasionally or once a day, rather, I think mindfulness is best practiced throughout ones day. Personally, I believe that I can use mindfulness by focusing my thoughts on simple everyday law school tasks such as before reading cases, briefing, and even before class discussion. Relaxing and taking the time to actually understand the material, its relevance and its placement in the entire scope of things cannot be overlooked. Yet, mindfulness is not simply about settling the mind and coming at peace with yourself simply for law school. Thus far, second semester has had more reading, more case briefing, and yes, more outlining then that of first semester. I’m not yet sure if that’s because I know what I am doing now, if there is more material, or if it’s a combination of both. I do know however that you have to give yourself a break from such things. That is where mindfulness is most crucial. To me mindfulness is about centering and coming to terms with yourself. Taking some short breaks or sometime off for myself will be a big step in helping me overall this semester. Through mindfulness I will reassess my position. I will recognize that yes, if I spend six to eight hours in the library a day, I can take Sunday off and relax and work on myself. I think often when in a competitive type of environment like law school, people forget that the entire purpose of school in general is to improve and get better inside and outside the classroom. So this semester I will strive to put in the work during the semester to improve my GPA, but I will also remember that its ok to take a break every once in a while and not run myself into the
