Comparing the Effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as an Intervention for Tinnitus
Introduction:
The aim of this study is to compare the how effective Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is when compared to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in managing the negative secondary side-effects from tinnitus. Both therapies are similar in that they take a person-centred approach to your tinnitus but differ in their application.
MBSR focuses on mindfulness and meditation as a way to overcome the negative emotions and effects of tinnitus. Mindfulness is the raised awareness of our emotions and thoughts. This awareness allows us to see patterns in our behaviours and thoughts. …show more content…
This interview aims to allow familiarisation to the study and ask any questions you have. If you wish to take part, you will receive a questionnaire to complete. This is the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10) which measures the level of stress you face in everyday life. If your score is above the mean threshold for your age category, you will be admitted to the study where a second questionnaire is conducted; the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI). You will then be referred to see the Audiology Hearing Therapist to prevent you from beginning the entire process again.
Will my data be confidential?
Yes, strict measures will be taken to ensure that all data is protected and confidential. All consent forms will have a number. This will be the identifying number for each participant that returns their form. Throughout the study, these numbers will be the method in which participants will be identified. No names will form part of the data analysis and dissemination of data. All personal contact details will be stored electronically on a single computer which will be password locked and encrypted. Only those directly involved in conducting the research will be able to unlock it.
Do I have to take part?
You are not obliged to take part in the study if you do not wish to. Throughout the study you are free to leave at any point without the need to give a reason and you will not be penalised for not completing any intervention. All your personal and collected data will be destroyed and not used in the final analysis of the study. If you wish to continue to receive treatment for your tinnitus, you will be returned on the routine NHS care pathway for tinnitus and referred to see an Audiology Hearing
