The children in the study had a hard time closing their eyes for meditation exercises, staying still, and would interrupt the exercise (Coholic, 2011). The study suggested the guided imageries be short and have the children work with clay, draw, or do Tai Chi while they listen to a meditative exercise because of children’s limited attention spans (Coholic, 2011).
I think art-based methods of mindfulness would be beneficial to all ages, including adults, because it makes mindfulness enjoyable. Using different methods to express your feelings can be helpful to everyone at any age. Sometimes it seems we are taught that certain emotions are “bad.” Teaching individuals that it’s normal to feel all our emotions and learn how to express them in a healthy way can be beneficial to children as well as adults.
I also like the idea of doing other things during meditation. This is definitely helpful for children, who may feel silly to close their eyes, and not have the control needed to stay still for a long period of time, but may also be helpful to adults who feel self-conscious about meditation or have attention disorders. I like the idea of drawing your emotions and think that could be beneficial to adults as well. Drawing all the feelings one experienced during the day and then discussing them would require reflection and articulation about your
