Intelligence is best understood not as the ability to retain information but rather the ability to get around in the physical world. There are downside and dangers to this whole extended mind thesis where as our mind moves into the world we become more vulnerable to their loss when they were protected on the inside of the skull. We often talk about the greatest tragedy being the people lose their memory such as their houses and their possessions basically become a part of them and the loss of them really feels like loss of one-self. But I think we have to remember we still always have consciousness in the middle of this and judgment and the extension of our minds does not obligate us from using our judgment with better and better technology, which becomes more and more flexible. The hope that the interplay of judgment and technology might move us forward in an interesting way. I actually think that we can conclude that this extended mind thesis offers us some hope of an optimistic worldview. If the extended mind thesis is correct there’s a sense in which the Internet is actually making us smarter. The Internet is getting inside our minds filling us with knowledge and as we know knowledge is power over time. This lead to a kind a potential democratization to of the powers of the mind as technology becomes cheaper and available to more and more advanced it will spread around the
