Betrayed, alone, neglected, unloved, forgotten, and in need for attention desperately. The 20-year old gunman, Adam Lanza, explained his feelings to reason his actions: killing elementary school students and teachers at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School. “One of Lanza's former teachers told investigators that during what were supposed to be brief creative-writing assignments, the young man produced long, disturbing passages” (Sanchez 1). These passages explored Lanza’s thoughts about war-like battles. Lanza was well educated and well written. Most schools in the nearby states changed their rules for visitors wishing to enter the school building. To ensure safety at my own high school in Long Island, all doors, except the main entrance, were locked all day to guarantee that there would be no intruders. With past events, like Columbine, schools should have already had these safety regulations in place to ensure there would be no other cataclysm again.

Miller states that, “we live in the Information Age and all the information is telling us that whatever we have done, whatever we are doing, and whatever we plan to do will never have any lasting significance” (Miller 9). The horrific event of Sandy Hook is an example to support Miller’s own thoughts. “He believed he was alone … He believed he was free” (Miller 34). The lack of social cues and the idea of asking for help contributed to the death of McCandless. The word given to the world from authors are fabricated and a mystery. Literate arts like books allow for the freedom of an authors word, to connect to readers, and to grab attention. McCandless put his full trust into a book that forgot to mention that the seeds of a potato that were poisonous.
