Milton Hershey was born on September 13, 1857, in Derry Township, Pennsylvania. He was an only surviving child of Veronica “Fanny” Snavely. His father had separated himself from his family the details are cloudy why. He had an incomplete education so he apprenticed with a master confectioner in Lancaster Pennsylvania. He later set up a sweet shop in Philadelphia for five years but had to up close shop, so he headed west to Denver where his father was and started work with a confectioner. He learned how to work with caramel he quit and went out on his own, he did this twice both times he failed. He went back to Lancaster and started a caramel company that boomed. In 1893 He went to the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where he got hooked
