Milošević was “the former president of Serbia and Yugoslavia”, “he was responsible for the politics that resulted in more than two hundred thousand dead.” It is hard for all of us to believe that a man so evil became president but it is not hard to realize why he was in that position in the first place. Milošević had legal-rational authority, that is what made him so powerful at the time. To me, the way Milošević obtained his authority characterizes him as a calculated oppurtunist who systematically understood how to manipulate an entire nation to bend to his will. At this moment, it became “easy for Slobodan Milošević to fill that emotional hunger.” To make matters worse, communism eventually collapsed and “people were even more lost, insecure, and frightened, almost like young children forced to start living on their own.” The vulnerability of the people was indeed evident. Milošević obviously saw what the people wanted most, a new leader and communism. He used that to his advantage and “made his way up to the top of the Communist Party structure, mercilessly ousting everybody in his way. But he was not a believer in communism.” The façade that Milošević put on to appeal to his nation soon made him a national hero. He incorporated “Serbian nationalism with his speeches” to maintain his good image in the eyes of his people. While people believed he was a good leader for standing up for Serbian nationalism, “what Milošević believed was that he could control the power of nationalism and manipulate it to his own benefit. He was a skillful demagogue riding on the patriotic feelings of others.” I say, Milošević was such a great actor; in fact, he was a mastermind. He knew how to toy with people’s feelings, he knew how to make people praise him “as if he
