Million Dollar Throw Character Analysis

In the book Million-Dollar Throw by Mike Lupica, a character that could be considered a best friend is Abby McCall, who is an artist. Abby McCall is best friends with the main character Nate Brodie, the star quarterback on his school football team. Abby can be considered a best friend because she always stood by Nate’s side, and helped him through tough times. An example that depicts Abby’s role as a supportive best friend reads, “That throw is the thing that we all gotta believe in, Brady, (Nate’s nickname) what keeps us all going” (Lupica 88). This quote explains that Nate was feeling the pressure of making the million dollar throw because Nate’s family desperately needed money to make ends meet. They put up their house for sale, and there is a point where parents were working multiple jobs. One million dollars would help lessen most of Nate’s family’s financial burdens. This conflict is man against society, which is an external conflict. In the story, this conflict is resolved; “the last few yards the spiral he’d throw looked like an arrow finding a bull’s-eye as it sailed cleanly through the hole” (Lupica 233). Nate resolved the conflict by winning the one million dollars, and being able to pay for his family’s bills. The song, “Hall of Fame,” by Script, emphasizes you can do anything you set your mind to. The lyrics include verses like “You could be the greatest, you could beat the world, be a champion, be believers…” Nate put his mind to making that throw, and that is exactly what he did despite all the pressure.
