I believe that the “psychiatric” approach to the play will hurt us more than help with our understanding of tragedy. If we look at all the other protagonists in other plays, we could all technically say that they all have a mental illness and stop looking for any other possible deeper meanings. This approach can help us understand why Willy talks to imaginary people, however this is a lazy approach to understanding about the story and other problems and characters in the story like Biff. Although I don’t think that a diagnosis will solve all the problems in the story, I think it will at least alleviate the issues.…

The perspective of political is inevitably shaped by the composer’s personal context and bias whereby tensions have risen between the political and the personal uphold pessimism and despair. Arthur Miller’s dramatic tragedy, The Crucible (1953) explores how individuals voices were suppressed during the McCarthyism movement in 1950’s America through the allegory of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Both texts explicate the power of political and social injustices to drive individuals to pursue their own motivations alongside the listening extract from Miller’s tragedy. The exploration of…

The basketball swished, going into the hoop. Circling, through the time of malevolence and gangs at Senya:the city, mostly populated by people that weren’t as well off;had food stamps;had heart disease;had problems. Wishing it would just go down a magical fountain or better yet, a clean drinkable fountain. Streetball, everybody played, joyful —looking softly and nicely when they reflect on when the hoops weren’t broken.…

On the topic of blindness, Miller's argument that one knows who he is before even opening his eyes in the morning is very interesting. It refutes Weirob's idea that seeing something is needed to realize its existence. The person who has his eyes shut in the morning, still knows that it is him, even without seeing his body. A blind person, never sees his body yet, still knows of his existence and consciousness. So it makes sense then, to say that even without seeing something, one can be consciousness of its existence.…

In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, the author perfectly portrays the effectiveness of conformity and individualism through the use of the character’s actions and the consequences that those who do not conform face. For instance, the readers are introduced to John Proctor , the poster child in this play for ‘fighting the system’. Miller uses this character primarily, along with stage directions, dialogue, and other characters, to form his idea of conformity and individualism, and how dangerous it is to stand up in a community where everyone seems to be sitting down. In the beginning of the play, John Proctor is introduced as a prideful man who is visibly against the agenda that Reverend Parris is pushing in the church.…

Chaucer does not believe that courtly love provides a useful set of rules and behaviours to guide men and women in their relationships, because in the Miller’s Tale he seems to be mocking the idea of courtly love. Through the analysis of the two major characters, Nicholas and Absolon, their adherence to the rules of courtly love and the relative success in their relationships explains what Chaucer is telling us about courtly love. Both characters adhere to the rules of courtly love, however only one is successful in winning Alison over. Nicholas, the poor, clever scholar rents out a room in John’s house and takes a liking to Alison. Arthur Miller would take an instant opposition to the HUAC testimonies and the ongoing blacklisting that occurred in the film and theatrical industries, as well as the opinion of people like McCarthy and Walter. In 1950, Miller wrote and produced An Enemy of the People, which is directly based on Henrik Ibsen’s play of the same name. While this play was received moderately well, it was largely ignored due to its lack of commercial success, which kept HUAC from directly attacking Miller. Instead, eyes turned towards Kazan as the director and major financial backer of the project. Both Miller and Kazan decided to go on hiatus after An Enemy to avoid the heat of anti-communist critics, but Miller couldn’t stay silent for…

“The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. Dikdan 1 Mackenzie Dikdan Webster P.3 History 10/7/15 Fashion of the Enlightenment Period During the chapters we read about the Enlightenment period, we did not read much about the fashion of that time. Although everyone had to wear clothes and it was a basic necessity, there is no correlation between the outfits and the events that took place. This is most likely the reason why it is not mentioned in our textbooks. The clothes people wore can reflect the views of that time period just as much as the events that took place.…
