Millennials, or generation Y, refers to people born after 1980. They are the most diverse generation in the history of the United States and are well on their way to rewriting tradition. Three out of 10 millennials say that they are not affiliated with a religion and are not religious people. This is very different because every other generation has had more than half stating that they are religious. A shocking fact is that less than 49 % of millennials call themselves patriotic, whereas, other generations were rated higher than 70%. This will change the work force because millennials have a different concept of what diversity is compared to other generations. Millennials do not tend to view diversity as differences in races and genders, but rather as having different life experiences. This is called cognitive diversity and can be defined as people that have a different problem solving methodology and have different experiences from each other. A recent study from Deloitte alluded to the fact many millennials stated that they don’t think about race or gender when they think about diversity. Studies have proven that employees are more productive, engaged, healthy, and happy when their needs are considered within an organization (Richman, 2008). The place that someone chooses to work can be parallel to marriage. There is a study, which implies that “a happy wife makes a happy life” (Carr, 2014). This statement also applies to the workplace that one chooses. It is important for employers to understand that the employees and the workplace should be handled as a union.
