In “The New Greatest Generation,” Joel Stein discusses how our generation is and will affect our future. There are three commonly known generation types such as, Baby Boomers born “between” 1946-1964, Generation X born “between” 1960-1980, and Millennials born “between” 1980-2000. Today’s kids are considered millennial born in an era that cell phones, tablets, and computers are used on a daily basis and seems to be the only way some people communicate with others. A significant proportion of those in the millennial generation are growing up isolated from most societies. They are threatened mostly because they are stereotyped as a generation that does not care about anyone or anything but themselves and at the same time an exciting generation because they are not afraid to try new things and easily adapt to change. Also, they mostly just do or say without thinking about the repercussions. They are known to move to a city on their own and start a business and have the capability to establish associations. They have become very intelligent in today’s modern technology also with social media. According to Joel Stein, he mentions on how the millennial generation is affected because they are spending more and more time on their smart devices, they are developing a laziness, an entitlement issue, and flat out selfish and shallow personalities (565). The Millennial Generation is also known as the Me Generation, who formed the Me Me Me self-interested attitude. Millennial’s parents try to enhance their children’s self-esteem, but instead, they seem to encourage narcissism in its place. With cell phones available to the majority of millennial children’s, they can socialize with others all day if they want. This creates a major problem not only at their educational facility, workplace, and home. Some have become addicted to their cell phones they either send or receive texts all day this is known as Phantom Pocket Vibration Syndrome.
