The milky way is a spiral galaxy. Scientifically its a barred spiral galaxy. Spiral galaxies make up about two thirds of the universe. The milky way is about 100,000 light-years across. It has four arms that spiral out from a center bulge. The four arms spiral around the central bulge. Our sun is on one of the four arms. Two of the arms are the major arms because they are bigger. The other two arms are smaller. Our sun and solar system is on the Orion arm. The Orion arm sits between the two bigger arms, Perseus, and …show more content…
There are always new stars being created within the arms. The arms of the Milky Way are in the part called the disc. It is about one thousand light-years in thickness. The center part of The Milky Way is called the Galactic Bulge. It is full of gas, dust, and stars. You can’t see into or even through the center part because the dust and gas is so thick. In the very center of the Milky Way is a black hole. The black hole is billions times bigger than our sun. It started of small but the massive amount of gas and dust allowed the black hole to grow into a giant. Scientist can't actually look at the black hole but they can see how it has a gravitational effect on objects near it. Scientist believe that most galaxies have black holes in a galaxies
