Military Women In Combat: Why Making It Official Matters

Women have been participating in the military for quite some time. Originally only men were allowed to join the military. Throughout the years of women participation they have demonstrated that they are as competent or even better than men. Most society portrayed women as being weak and emotional but aren’t some men also like that. In 2003 it was a significant year for women because it allowed them to move into combat that formerly only men could. Jena McGregor a writer for the Washington Post wrote an article “Military Women in Combat: Why Making it Official Matters” argues that women should be allowed in combat and should be treated equally as men. If women have the right to vote then why shouldn’t they be able to do what men can do, especially when your giving your life in combat. An example is “When President George W. Bush announced the initiation of the military actions in Iraq on March 19,2013, this time, in contrast to the first Persian Gulf War, women were more readily accepted in nontraditional positions and they had vigorously trained for those more directly engaged combat. Women were flying Kiowa scout helicopters, repairing mechanized vehicles, opening supply lines, leading the assault for an engineer support battalion, and for the first time, flying a B-2 in a combat mission”(Castro 100). This quote means that women are doing a men’s job like flying a helicopters and they are repairing vehicles. Because women were given the opportunity for military actions they were able to fly a B-2 for the first time ever. Women had no restriction in Iraq they were able to experience a combat mission and they were able to lead a battalion.
