Military Tutoring Narrative

As I get off the bus from the long day of school, I head on over to the building ahead of me to now start with the next task in my day, tutoring. The school year had just begun a short while ago and I had to juggle the responsibilities of a new job and school work for the first time. Walking into the school, I saw the familiar faces of kids I worked with before when I previously volunteered on my free time. Once I settled into a classroom to start, students came in with their books and started to work away at their homework. All but one of the faces seemed familiar, so I checked to see who the new student was. “Hey, I’m Josiel. I’ll be a tutor for you this year. What’s your name?” “Ernesto, I’m in seventh grade.” “Nice, what are your interests when it comes to school?” “Nothing, school hasn’t really done much for me so I thought I would just go to the military instead.” Hearing this caught me off guard at that moment. “Wait, don’t you think it’s a bit too soon to decide to go off into the military?” But Ernesto continued, saying, “I mean, I haven’t been getting the help I need when it comes to school so I just thought my only real option would be the military.” Wondering how he came to this conclusion, I realized a huge difference there was between us, options. …show more content…
John’s Prep, a private high school focused on developing the whole person with its education, I had more options than I initially realized. Since the day that I’ve came to the school, I was provided with choices over classes or activities I could partake in. Unlike Ernesto, I had the choice on whether or not I wanted to pursue something like computer science in college, with classes I chose like Algorithmic Thinking, or even law, with taking classes such as Constitutional Law. Even bigger than that, I have a choice in what college I want to go to in the upcoming

High school is a staple of American culture. Popular culture is littered with high school imagery: cheerleaders at the homecoming game, senior prom, and finally, graduation. It is a major time of growth for adolescents and serves as a stepping stone into the adult world, giving students the skills and experiences needed to be successful later in life. However our perception of high school and the ‘high school experience’ is rapidly changing as alternatives to traditional schooling appear. An excellent example of this is an emerging program commonly referred to as ‘early college high school’, a duel enrollment program that allows high school students to receive an associate’s degree while earning their high school diploma.…

Each college student knows what it is like to constantly worry whether or not the score on the ACT is high enough to get accepted into a school or if certain AP credits will transfer to the school of choice. It’s my junior year of high school, and I had just begun looking at colleges and universities I believed would suit me personally and educationally. Each school was severely critiqued on certain elements they had to offer, such as, majors/minors, clubs and organizations, pre-professional programs, and even extracurricular activities. This was going to be the place I would ultimately spend the next four years of my life, so I needed to make the perfect decision.…

Should younger kids go into the military? I personally think no because of multiple reasons. I do not think everyone should go into the military because they have not lived their life yet, the possibility of dying young, and not being physically prepared. But it is my opinion, not anyone else's, even though some might think the same as me. I believe everyone should be able to decide on their own.…

I am jerked from my daze back into the daily humdrums of activity surrounding me – my teacher has a look of discontent plastered on her face. Rocket ships swirl in dizzying loops around her head, an odd purple creature peaks from behind. She asks if I am paying attention, I take a moment before I nod. In my mind, she has relented – in reality, I will be sent home with a hastily written request for a parent-teacher conference. We all know the drill by now.…

I am in eighth grade. It is a sunny, warm Sunday in early fall at the St. Peter's Prep Open House. Shuffling behind colossal seniors leading the tour, scratching at my itchy dress shirt, and raiding the snack table are all included in the day’s festivities. Four years ago, I made the decision to attend St. Peter’s Prep, a school that is approximately 45 miles away from my house.…

Since sophomore year, I have been staying after school in order to tutor students in math. As a member of my school’s Math Honors Society, I am required to complete eight hours of tutoring per school year.
