One of the primary occurrences in these trends seems to be removing the human element from more and more tasks. The advances in robotics and drones shows this on a daily basis. In the military, I see that the push to remove men and women from harm’s way is driving the desire to develop machines that can gather intelligence, engage targets, and even take point on dangerous missions (Mong). There are advances on the horizon that could make air travel unmanned and you could even get packages delivered to your door by a flying drone. I have my own reservations about how positive these advances are. I worry that our society is not as ready as it thinks for such technology. Our government is in turmoil and so is the world that we live in. These advances would result in the loss of jobs and without a focus on education and strengthening our own economy, I fear that there will be an even greater gap between social classes. Studies show that the United States is behind in math and science and has not shown significant improvement since the 1970’s (Statistics About Education in America).
Another emerging trend I see that is affecting my career is cyber warfare. Recent cyber-attacks to our economy and our military are exposing the need to advance quickly in this area.
