Where are the Teachers
Living on a military base present’s obstacles sometimes. One issue that seems common at most bases is the lack of help child care programs have. At Eielson Air Force Base, AK, the Child Development Center (CDC), Youth Center, and After School Program are all affected by the need of teachers. Since these programs are shorthanded, the waiting list to enroll your child can be long. These programs are put in place to help active duty and civil working parents. However; the programs cannot help if there is not enough help within the programs to take care of the children. Where are the teachers?
A problem that Eielson AFB has in finding teachers for the military’s programs is its location. The city North Pole is about 9 miles

Mrs. Patty was able to hire two new staff members last month, who in turn will start at the end of March as long as they are approved. Unfortunately, two staff members recently gave their notice; meaning Mrs. Patty needs to start the process all over.
Since it is difficult hiring teachers from the surrounding area, the CDC, Youth Center, and After School Program pull their resources from those that live on base. This is great, as long as there are qualified teachers living on the base that pass the background check. The downside of this is that military personnel are only here for three to four years. This creates a constant turnover effect for the child care programs since they cannot be consistent. For example, the Director and Assistant Director of the CDC is a 3 year spot. After 3 years, new people are hired. Basically, once a new director has established some sense of continuity, he or she is replaced.
Another deal breaker is that people are aware of the problems the child care programs face. Once one is hired as a staff member, they can work at any of the three programs. This means that a teacher may be hired to work at the Youth Center, but if the CDC is short staffed, this same teacher may
