Additionally, Serrano explains the multitudes of harassment taking place in the military. Women in combat work forces are more likely to be harassed because of the closed-in environments with men and other women. Finally, training women receive is rigorous, and it is not uncommon for women to go home with many health complications. Serrano concludes, females should take jobs such as human resources, journalism, or alternatives, but U.S. Infantry should be off-limits.…
Remember when segregation was an issue? Remember when sexism were an issue? I do, and that issue is still going on today. “Why Marines, Unlike Army and Navy, Are So Against Women in Combat” by Anna Malrine speaks of the injustice and sexist attitudes portrayed by the Marin Corps in recent discussions. Malrine is honest when she speaks of the wrongful attitudes toward women in this article, women in combat could help our marines not hurt them, women can help have a different mindset, open up areas that men can not fit in, and work with the women of the world.…
The author of the essay, “Military Women in Combat, Why Making It Official Matters”, Jena McGregor starts right off by telling you the topic she will cover. She starts the essay with the sentence, “It’s been a big couple of weeks for women in the military” to draw in her audience by leaving them intrigued from something that hasn’t changed in years. After using that sentence to catch the audience’s attention, she then states, “Last week, female soldiers began formally moving into jobs in previously all-male battalions, a program that will later go Army-wide” as a strong thesis. McGregor goes on to talk about how many jobs have opened to women in the military by the rules getting changed. Although she adds this huge fact she also added how…
Ladies merit more regard. For a long while now, ladies have been taking part in the military, which, obviously, initially just permitted men. During the time of their interest, ladies have shown that they are pretty much as able as their male partners. A year ago was an especially critical year for female troopers as they were at long last permitted to move into legions that were in the past all male. Jena McGregor, an author for the Washington Post, kept in touch with her considerations on this chronicled accomplishment for ladies in her piece "Military Women in Combat: Why making it Official Matters.…
In society, more often than not, individuals are expected to uphold a certain appearance and image of themselves; men are supposed to act masculine, while women are pressured to act in a feminine manner. These expectations extend to social class systems as well; the rich and upper middle class families are always expected to accomplish greatness, while lower class families are not believed to achieve anything of value in their lifetime. If these societal values are challenged, the offender will be outcasted from society. Which eventually causes individuals to give up on identity formation and conform to societal expectations. Similarly, Karen Ho and Susan Faludi, authors of “Biographies of Hegemony” and “The Naked Citadel”, discuss the formation…
As a modern, growing country America has supposedly overcome ideas such as strict traditional gender roles. Author Tarak Barkawi confronts this issue as he argues we have missed an area in our United States military. His article published in 2012 titled, “Equality in Army and Society”, harshly challenges the rules and regulations in the U.S army against women’s rights. Barkawi’s main point is, women do not have the same career opportunities due to traditional roles, masculinity in the military, and civilian ideas of gender roles. Barkawi states, “the army is one of the last redoubts of traditional masculinity”.…
To begin with, she is in the military which is a male dominated occupation. Beyond that, she is a Marine. To quote professor Walker “Not only is the Marine Corps masculine, its hyper masculine”. The Marine Corps has the lowest percentage of females of all the US military branches. The expectation of females in the Corps is one of two models.…
The Marine Corps has consistently tackled the contentious topic of the expanding role of women in the armed forces. In recent years, some historic upheavals include the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the removal of gender-restrictions on military occupational specialties. Additional amendments are in the critical implementation and testing phase - unisex uniforms, new physical fitness requirements, and changes in retention dynamics. In order to fully understand this multifaceted issue, this paper will utilize several levels of analysis to decipher the level at which these major decisions are being made, as well as theories of action to make sense of the logic behind these conclusions.…
Military science fiction has grown up over the years. Gone are the days when a simple plot would suffice. Readers demanded more of an intricate story, something they can proverbially sink their teeth into. They do not want something that could be read in hours. Because of this demand, story plots are more complex today than in earlier years.…
It’s 1775, the Revolutionary War is emerging and all eligible males have joined together to fight for their independence and for this country's freedom. Little do most people know, their wives followed them to war assisting in anyway possible. Only with the permission of the commanding officers, these brave and committed women were cooks, laundresses, and nurses. Later down the road during World War I, 33,000 women sacrificed their lives helping our great nation's military branches. Over 400 of these women lost their lives fighting this war as nurses and support staff.…
The mentality that femininity should not be present in The Citadel ended up backfiring on some cadets themselves. Just how one cadet “said he was falsely accused of having a sexual encounter with a male janitor, recalled a year of isolation - cadets refused to sit next to him in the mess hall or in classes - and terror: incessant threatening phone calls and death threats”…
On 3 December 2015, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that all branches of the military must open all combat roles to women within one year. This brings new urgency to the issue of rampant sexual assault and harassment in the U.S. military. Roughly 19,000 U.S. servicemen and servicewomen were sexually assaulted or raped last year while serving their country - that is approximately 52 cases per day. Their assailants by-and-large were other service members. Although roughly 80% of cases go unreported, those who do report often face retaliation from their units or commanding officers.…
The purpose of this essay is to discuss the issue of sexual assault in the military. Sexual assault remains a persistent problem in the military, with more than 20,000 active duty service members experiencing unwanted sexual contact in 2014, and sexual assaults even occurring in combat environments. The estimations of sexual assaults that occur during military service range from 9.5 % to 43 % among women and 1 to 12 % among men. In the most recent survey of sexual assault in the military, 4.9 % of active duty women and 1.0 % percent of active duty men reported being sexually assaulted within the past year. Although sexual assaults still occur frequently within service-members, there is a variety of resources available for leaders to implement…
Whenever I am having issues with someone or think I might be overthinking a situation I go to my husband. He is fantastic about seeing things from both sides and telling it how it is. So many times, I have asked him for advice with a friend or conversation. He normally tells me his view and many times I have conformed to it because he explains to me how the other person might be taking what I am saying as rude ect. I have a high respect for him and his judgement, so I feel very lucky to have his honest opinion even if it’s not what I always want to hear.…
