Forcing the Military
What if there was no push to persuade young people to go to college after graduation, but a push for them to go off and fight for their country? We would have a culture of breeding warriors and not innovative thinkers and creators. Not only that, but people would only look forward to obtaining a higher education if they made it out of the military unscathed. This would be the reality of the United States if we were to impose a mandatory two year military requirement on young people after graduation and it once was when we had the military draft. One author points out, “The draft has been controversial since the Vietnam War, when thousands of young American men were drafted into the armed forces and many of them killed” (Ruschmann, 2004). It is important to note the draft was reserved specifically for male citizens in the United States and restricted to women. The country would eventually shift to an all-volunteer military in the early seventies. According to one text, “The draft ended in 1973, when the Army began its policy of an all-volunteer force” (Rosinsky, 2009). This is important considering it indicates how the draft was not necessary, as enough people would volunteer to serve for the country without being forced.
If a two year military requirement were imposed on students graduating from high school, it would lead to citizens having a lower morale. This would result due to the fact that the free will of individuals would essentially be being taken away by the government. There would be no need for people to expect doing what they want following high school graduation, as their course would already be set.
