Military Movie Analysis

Being a disabled veteran along with still working for the military as an Air Force civilian employee at Tinker Air Force base has heightened my emotions to real life events portrayed in movies. I can watch other movies where people get injured, die, deal with family or life issues in general and not be bothered by what I see. On the other hand, when I watch military movies both new and old that are based on true life events, it truly stirs a lot of emotions within me. The experience I have when I see these films and actually analyze what I am watching internally is a feeling that is hard to explain. This is where I feel military movies based on actual events wins the prize for me. These movies in some instances have real people, real events …show more content…
Whether it is an old movie such as To Hell and Back from the 50’s or the most recent blockbuster movie, American Sniper, the directors are able to bring out the real life drama that takes place in battle. The fact that Audie Murphy was willing and able to portray himself in To Hell and Back is what makes it a classic and undoubtedly my favorite war movie of all time. Movies like Black Hawk Down and Lone Survivor are stories based off actual missions in some of our most recent conflicts that really stir a lot of emotion. I have a recorded copy of the actual documentary on the true story of Black Hawk Down that was shown on CNN several years ago. That documentary shows live footage as well as some of the actual Army Rangers and Delta Force soldiers involved in the raid of Mogadishu. I personally know guys who were stationed there and involved in that raid and when I watch it to this day it makes the hair on my neck stand up. In some instances, I get an anxious or overwhelming feeling and start to sweat just watching a movie, because I know the guys in that movie are acting out real life events that happened in real combat situations. Of course, every movie cannot be word for word, or action for action, but how Ridley Scott was able to make movies like Black Hawk Down so realistic and so dramatic based on actual events is truly

Regardless of the type of war or war that is being depicted the genre generally focuses on heavy combat scenes that are central to the dramatics of the film. The general themes of the film include combat, survival, escape, sacrifice, effects of the war, and moral and human issues raised by the war. In addition to these, Belton points out four other conventions of the American war film; the suspension of civilian morality, goals of the group takes precedence, rivalry of men and objectification of women, and lastly the “reintegration” into society. Most films of this genre follow these conventions. For example, the 2001, John Moore film Behind Enemy Lines, during the final stages of the Bosnian War in 1995, two naval flight officers discover the mass graves and order to be shot down my the Serbs.…

I was kind of confused at first because the film had no clear protagonist and antagonist.…

Full metal jacket is the best anti-war movie I have ever seen. As soon as the movie started, it depicted the real struggle of being in marines. I was shocked how recruits were verbally and physically abused believed to be as a part of preparation of getting into marine as a rough and tough. The scene in which Pyle shot General and himself made me really upset and scared at the same time. It made me feel that the bully and abuse in the platoon ended life of Pyle.…
