Military Militarization Essay

Militarization of a civilized society can be very quiet, acting behind the scenes and is often used in the justification of political and economic agenda’s such as the militarization of the United states post 9-11. Public propaganda does not need to be utilized in order to effect a social perception of an enemy, but is often an effective tool for swaying social acceptance and commitment to the militarization process (Lutz 2002). Routinizing and normalizing terror has aided the U.S in effectively allocating resources to the military, changing social perceptions and ideologies and creating a large standing army under the guise of humanitarian efforts. Silver Bosnia gave the account of a mine digger, Milos, who was content in performing his job, providing stability for his family and taking pride in his life’s work. When the military in Bosnia intervened and shifted his job focus and duties from the mining of precious metals, to disposing of bodies of the Bosniak and Croat population in mass grave locations, Milos did not have to agree, he just had to keep doing his job. The military was attempting to cleanse the country by ethnic extermination and by simply performing his job, albeit with people instead of minerals and precious metals, Milos was effectively swept up into the process of militarization of the area (Peric 2012). He did not have to agree with the ideology that founded the conflict, nor did he have to openly oppose the discourse about whom the military and government had determined was now an enemy, he simply had to continue to perform his job, digging. After the conflict ended Milos confessed to the location of many mass graves, claiming that a war criminal would never reveal such things, therefore he was still just doing his job.
