What is a Leader? A leader is defined as someone who commands a group or organization. That’s your basic Google answer; however, there is so many aspects that coordinate with being a leader. The most common is the Military; Leaders are developed in the Military, even if that person believed their entire life they weren’t a leader. Not everyone is aware that there is no “one way” to lead, there is an infinity of ways to be a leader. As the leaders of tomorrow, you should be aware of some of the traits and skills of a leader.
“Good set of values, self discipline, essential life skills, and a bold sense of commitment. If you hold dear and true to all of those, you will be excellent in front of all your peers and superiors, they will think of you as an outstanding person to follow. You will find yourself being the Leader you’ve always wished to be.” (C/Cpt. Cole Shaffer). The skill to be a leader is one which is learned and learning can only be achieved if you are following the example and teachings of another who is leading.” (Maj. Rick Rutledge). The most common assumption of a leader is that they are born with the ability and traits of a great leader; that assumption is massively incorrect. Leadership is taught, not learned, it is something one develops through time. And each leader is different.
Each leader is different and was taught differently. But one aspect all leaders have in common is the ability to understand others. You can’t just lead someone without not having gained their respect. You have to understand them and know them. Without knowing someone, it doesn’t make you a leader, it makes you a boss. A boss forces people to do something with leading them. Bosses are not Leaders, and Leaders are not
