The military definition of leadership is to make people accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction, and motivation. That definition does not change regardless of the rank or position that you achieve. The venue or the scope of the operation might change, but the core fundamentals of leadership remain the same. When someone is recommended for the first promotion board, those NCOs are telling all of the board members that the individual can perform his job to standard or exceeds it. The NCOs are also telling the board members that the individual is capable and ready to deal with soldiers and will have their best interest at heart all of the time.

As a young NCO in the Field Artillery world, I was in charge of 4-6 soldiers in our section. I had the benefit of having good leadership above me to develop me along the way. There were many lessons I learned along the way, none more Important than mentorship. I had to learn that I could

So this answered the age old question: “why do officers get paid so much more when the enlisted do all the work?” I took this to heart as I went to my first aviation unit, but my leadership style and methods never changed. I no longer had soldiers that worked directly for me, but I did have soldiers in the company and some of them worked for me indirectly, such as the arms room and during UMO duties. I would teach them the primary duties of my job so they could fill in if I was not available. Once again, teaching your replacement. Other tasks that I helped the soldiers out with were simple things such as how to write a memorandum for record, or they would ask for my advice on a certain matter.
