Controversive Military Leadership

As a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy one of my responsibilities is to take care of Sailors by guiding them in accordance with Navy Regulations. This responsibility can be very satisfying, personally rewarding, and challenging. In the end, what we are doing is training the future leaders of the Navy to hold a certain level of responsibility, be able to enforce standards, while at the same time encouraging them to achieve their personal and professional goals.

Most of the time, this leadership role can feel as though I am being a parent of these Sailors. From ensuring that they complete orders and directions as required, to executing disciplinary measures, military leadership has taken a different role since my

No more are the days when a Chief or Officer for that matter would yell at his subordinates in order for an order to be executed. Nowadays if such occurs, it will likely result in a grievance against the Chief. Good introductory paragraphs helps follow the discussion

With a personality trait of ESFJ, I am classified as an extravert. This trait, in leadership literature, has been found to be “the most important trait of effective leaders” (Robbins & Judge, 2009, p.386). Although other traits, such as openness and conscientious are also common key traits amongst good leaders, none show the same level of strength as extraversion (Robbins, 2009, p.387). At the same time, being extroversive may not be the only superior trait needed to be a successful leader.

Least Preferred Coworker Score

One of the ways to determine which leadership style you have is by determining your least preferred coworker (LPC) score. This score is determined through a 16 question questionnaire and was developed by Fred Fiedler. It helps determine whether a person is either relationship or task oriented (Robbins & Judge, 2009, p.392). My score was a 61, which falls in between both.

In today’s society, not only in the military, being a charismatic leader is a great advantage. That is because “charisma is a special subtype of leadership involving personal qualities and interpersonal relationships between the leader and the follower that are not found in the general population of leaders” (Keithly and Tritten, 1997). aGood use of a reference-but check the need for a page or paragraph (if an online source) number in direct quotes.
