Establishing Joint Bases is the best solution for the military to deal with fiscal constraints, as consolidating military branches to Joint Bases reduces the amount of funds that are required to be appropriated for a military installation’s operation and maintenance. By merging multiple bases, the US military could quickly see an exponential amount of savings, such as those experienced at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). At JBLM, according to the Base Commander, Colonel Charles Hodges, after becoming a joint base the base was able to save $5.7 million by streamlining communication networks,6 $350,000 a year by establishing a single fire department,7 and $3.3 million in a year in fuel savings by conducting training exercises locally.8 Additionally, consolidating branches onto Joint Bases can reduce other cost, such as the amount of medical facilities that are required to be built, the amount of support personnel necessary to operate a base. which enables the military to reduce the amount of personnel that need to
