Compulsory military enlistment is when joining the military is mandatory. Currently the United States has a draft. A draft is compulsory recruitment for military service. Although the draft is only for when we go to war and we need a larger military. There is a difference between mandatory military enlistment and the draft. The difference is that mandatory enlistment means that no matter what race, gender, size, etc. that after they graduate high school they have to go into the military and train for at least two years. The draft is joining the military only if we are going to war and need a larger military. Making enlisting in the military mandatory could potentially put young people’s lives at risk. This also delays individuals’ pursuit for higher educations as well as their entry into the civilian labor market, reducing returns to human-capital investments as a result (connectusfund.org). Recruitment age is 18 which is the age when people’s learning ability is at its peak.
