Reinstating the Draft
During the Vietnam War the public was upset with the military draft policies, even during previous wars there was some debate about the rules. The WWII draft had caused nearly the majority of men that were of age to be sent overseas. Women had to be sent to work leaving families at home and taking over the role of the men. Women were practicing hard labor, putting together planes, weapons, and ammunition; children were even helping. The draft has positive and negative sides, which are constantly being debated by men and women alike. There are positives to an enhanced military; more people to protect our country and end a war quicker. Although an expanded military seems alluring there are downsides to the majority of men being drafted. There also are family concerns and unfair advantages.

China is already a massive country and currently growing, which means their army is growing or another example is India. Although America is an extremely powerful country, our population does not compare to countries like China or India. We are powerful in our government and economy, but many militaries are going to soon expand further than ours. The draft would create a bigger and stronger military against foreign or domestic dangers. The more soldiers there are, the more training men will acquire to defend our country and freedoms, as well as their own. The draft also would create responsible citizens and children would grow up to appreciate their country and freedoms more. It is said that the moral and motivated will be victors, but I also believe that it is extremely hard for men to be motivated for war when they have to leave their families

The President thought that increasing the strength of the military would help prepare them for war. The whole country was backed up on spending money for national security, and some even claimed that “[We] shall have no other business, no other aim in life, but primitive self-defense” (Document C). Besides the navy, the peace draft created through the Selective Service Act (1940) was also important to maintain national security. By preparing the soldiers to defend their country, FDR was also preparing them to go to war. The army would be the only way to secure protection from Germany, which would lead to horrible effects for the Americans, such as having to deal with Germany trade control (Document D).…

Although these are very possible effects from creating a law of conscription, I do believe that the outcome would be far more beneficial than not, and if implemented with great care the benefits would greatly outnumber the adverse effects. Discipline would be another benefit handed out rather than government welfare. Job skills would be “issued” in their government issued pack. Other benefits not widely known is when you join the military they pay for housing.…
