The future of transgender service members now hangs in a delicate balance. President Donald Trump’s announcement in July, banning transgender people from serving in the armed forces has elicited widespread controversy and concern for the minority group (Miller).
Of course, this is not the first time non-heterosexual prospective and serving members of the United States military have been put at risk simply because of their sexual orientation. This gives way to tensions which may, over time, blow up into conflicts that threaten to destroy social relations (Turner).
According to Durkheim, social order is stipulated by ideas, values, norms and beliefs that are part of a people and what characterizes them (Turner). By issuing the new order, President Trump has violated American values, which promise fairness and equality for all.
Already, the repercussions of this move, in form of conflict, are manifesting themselves. Civil rights groups, for instance threatened to sue for what they considered a discriminatory move (Holpuch). Leaders and members of the military, past and current, have also openly condemned the ban (Hsu). This kind of discrimination and the consequential conflict threatens peace and progress, which is why a study into the conflict perspective of sexual orientation and military service is critical.
