Military Child

Decent Essays
As a military child, I feel that the military is an important part of our country. Military members greatly respect the flag, depending on the type of base, lowering the flag demands all respect, and is even accompanied by music. I have seen cars driving completely stop, people freeze, and children stop playing just to face the direction of the flag completely still until they are dismissed by the end of the song. I have also attended DODDs schools the majority of my life, and there they greatly respect the military community. Though this all remains true, I have seen people not participate in the national anthem. They usually don’t do this in the presence of soldiers, for it’s considered rude in the military community, but during school some

Texas v. Johnson When the National Anthem comes on everyone stands, takes off their hats, and puts their hand over their heart to honor the United States of America. Citizens do this to respect the nation and all that have died for their freedom. There are laws that say that people in the United States have to respect the flag in many ways, but what if someone breaks those laws to exercise their freedom of speech? What laws are more important, freedom of speech or flag desecration laws? The ruling in the case of Texas v. Johnson was correct because of how the Texas Penal Code was written, the First and Fourteenth Amendments and how the Supreme Court interpreted the law.…

In today's culture we have seen people disrespecting our country, our military, and our flag by taking a knee during the National Anthem; thinking about those situations make me embarrassed to be affiliated with such a group of Americans. Those men and women sacrifice their lives so we can live ours and that idea ,right there, is what makes our country so beautiful and so peaceful, so why not be on our feet with our hands over our hearts reciting our anthem to show them we are thankful for their bravery? That is the least we could do since they get shipped away from their loving families to risk their lives for our freedom, which sometimes we do not…

From growing up in a military family, I have become very resilient and I adapt really well to change. With my surroundings changing all the time, I have to be able to quickly adapt to my new setting and find ways to fit in as quickly as possible. I have been to about twelve different schools so far, and I have lived in about eight different houses. When I live on a military base, change is constant, even if it is not my own family experiencing the orders to move that year. The houses around me fill and empty all the time with new people, and some of the military dominant schools I have been to have the same problem.…

For example, during my last visit to the SeaWorld theme park in San Antonio, TX my family and I had arrived a few minutes prior the park opening its gates. Prior to opening the gates, the park played the United States National Anthem, and I was disgusted by what I had observed. Young men were walking around, talking, laughing, joking, chewing gum, and wearing headgear! If you ask someone who has served in the United States military about the proper etiquette whilst the National Anthem is being played I guarantee you that they will inform you of the proper customs and courtesies, which would be close to United States Code Title 36 chapter 10 §171. (USFlag.org: A website dedicated to the Flag of the UnitedStates of America - United States Code) which states that, “all civilians should stand at attention and place their right hand over their heart, those who are wearing headgear should remove said headgear and hold it at their left shoulder with their hand placed over their heart, as for any person in uniform should render the military salute through the anthems entirety.”…

Limiting the freedoms of the bill of right does not make us more patriotic, but threatens our core belief system, and lastly Our democracy is strong because we tolerate all peaceful forms of expression, no matter how uncomfortable they make us feel or how much we disagree. News of professional football players such as Colin Kaepernick and other athletes refusing to stand for the national anthem flood the headlines of American media today. These high profile individuals do not care, maybe even refuse to acknowledge, that their forgetfulness of their great American heritage and their disrespect for the symbol of our freedom, the American flag, has a very harmful impact on others. These high profile individuals’ overt actions towards the symbol of our freedom, the American flag, not only show their forgetfulness of our great heritage, but are also blinding others like high school athletes to do the same. To me, and the majority of Americans, particularly those who put themselves in harm’s way, their families and those who have lost loved ones doing so, this is very…

Not rising for the flag is just a quiet way of showing people that you don’t agree with everything that America has been doing. It’s holocaust remembrance day and my best friends and I are burning flowers to honor the people who died in the concentration camps. One of my friends tells me that she brought extra flowers than the usual four to commemorate the ones who have died in the east from genocide too. I feel so bad for the families that have lost their loved ones to genocide that it makes me realize that genocide is the worst outcome of the war. This is because of the destruction it causes and the mental toll that it causes. Although I know some people will say underage soldiers are the worst outcome of war, this is not true because genocide has longer lasting impacts on the way of life.…

I’ve stood up, placed my right hand over my heart, and performed these lyrics of the pledge of allegiance since kindergarten. I never quite understood why some students were so ignorant and would choose to sit or sleep in highschool when we were asked to stand for the pledge. In middle school and elementary we would all happily stand and all proudly yell the lyrics to the pledge without hesitation but that’s because we were too naive to understand the defiant meaning behind those stars and stripes.…
