Properly Utilizing Military Chain of Command
The chain of command structure is part of the bureaucratic business model that proclaims that organizational efficiency is derived from proper job specialization. Three key concepts associated with a chain of command structure are: the delegation of power stretching from a single individual at the top of the business’s organization down to the lowest employees, each level of leadership having the proper authority to successfully complete their role, and unity of command where all individuals in the organization are united towards a singular vision. The chain of command establishes an opportunity for mentoring and guiding the newer members, those who will eventually grow and mature to be the future leaders. Supervisors should be given the opportunity to can focus on outlining clear expectations and giving constructive performance feedback while building trust and respect with their subordinates. It is also important that these managers knowing that the chain above their level is taking care of their needs. The modern business world may see the discipline, rigidity, and strictly controlled structure of the military’s chain of command to be outdated; it is the singular vital link that keeps an organization this large working. The President of The United States (POTUS) is the functioning CEO of the United States Military. He is at the top for the leadership ladder, but he does not make decisions alone. Whereas a corporation has a board of directors, POTUS has along with him his chief advisors, the cabinet, the houses, and other governmental parties. As far as the military is concerned, POTUS delegates military affairs to the Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) who is the mediator between POTUS and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. These individuals are the highest ranking member of each military branch and it there job to work
