Because both sides refrained from any direct conflict in the Cold War, nuclear and military strength seemed like the only way to convince either side to back down, but this only resulted in the two countries continuously building up their power in a struggle for outdoing each other. Although North Korea is nowhere near the military or nuclear strength of the US, their goals are similar to the USSR. They are amassing more nuclear capabilities and trying to pose as a bigger threat to the US. Understandably, all countries involved with the tensions surrounding North Korea want to avoid conflict and defuse the increasingly delicate situation. Instead of further developing nuclear weapons and imposing more strength on North Korea, these countries are trying to encourage North Korea to act responsibly with international safety in mind (Cook, 1). This is a clear evolution in how the US handled negotiations with the USSR. President JFK’s solution for the USSR’s aggression was to match it and openly threaten the Soviet nation. Now the US is looking for other solutions in this ongoing relationship with North
