Milgram’s Obedience Experiment The Milgram’s Obedience experiment was one of the most famous studies of obedience in psychology. This was a series of experiments conducted by Stanley Milgram, a psychologist at Yale University in 1963, 1964 and 1965. The purpose of this study was to measure the willingness of participants to obey an instruction from an authorized person who instructed them to perform acts if it involved harming another person. In other words, this experiment was centering on the conflict between obedience to authority and personal conscience. In this experiment, participants were recruited for a lab experiment investigating of ‘‘memory and learning’’, …show more content…
Plus, the researchers should inform their participants about the true purposes of the study, the pros and cons of participation and their rights to terminate participation in the study. As a result, the participants can freely consent or refuse to participate in the research to avoid the social conflicts after that. In this case, participants of the Milgram’s experiment can withdraw themselves from the experiment anytime if they are distressed throughout the procedures. Furthermore, there are several methods such as role playing, simulations and “honest” experiments can be done to avoid the use of deception in the research. For example, the experimenter depicts a situation to participants and then asks them how they are going to respond to the situation in one of role playing procedure whereas another type of role playing uses simulation of a real-world situation. Simulations is used to investigate the conflict between competing individuals such as driving behavior using driving simulators and such simulations will encourage a high degrees of participation among participants. For the protection of participants, debriefing need to done as in the Milgram’s experiment. In fact, debriefing serves as an opportunity for the researchers to address the issues of deception, withholding information and potential evil effects of participation. However, there is necessary for the …show more content…
Social influence or social support condition seems to aid in the healing process of patients. This may be achieved when the doctor has a good relationship with multiple members of a family. For instance, a good relationships between doctor and patient’s family members can help to improve the compliance of patient to the treatment and medications. In this case, the treatment option that suggested for patient need to be both agreed by the patient as well as patient’s family member. Therefore, this can improve the health and quality of life of the patient through the agreement of all parties. The relationship between doctor and patient as well as the patient’s family serves to hold considerable healing power. The power differences which had shown in the Milgram’s experiment can be seen in the hospital settings, in which patient will choose to trust more on the official doctor but refuse to cooperate with medical students. In the Milgram’s experiment, the obedience level was dropped to 20% when the experimenter was taken over by an ordinary public with an ordinary clothes rather than a lab coat. While in the hospital settings, many patients are found not giving a full cooperation to the medical students during the history taking or physical examination. This
