People are subject to influence from their peers and contextual surroundings. In Milgram's classic obedience study, he cites an experiment in which three teachers, two of which are actors, join the real subject. When the two actors refuse to continue with the experiment, 90% of subjects “joined their disobedient peers and refused as well” (Milgram, 1973). The authority that many groups establish of themselves, without holding any authority at all, is a powerful dynamic that most find impossible to resist. This paper has examined how large entities assert themselves by manipulating social conscience and behaviour, as well as how they’re able to reach that power through the growing social media platform.
