Miley Cyrus was known as one of the most popular Disney Channel stars but, her fame began to fade which forced her to reinvent her star text, making her one of the most revolutionized celebrities in her generation. A star text is an image of everything that we associate with a star, including their promotion and body of work. Miley’s original image was developed from her years working on the show Hannah Montana which built her original image of being known as a sweet and innocent teenage girl. The ‘Hannah Montana’ brand identity connected her with a narrow audience of adolescent pre-teen’s. In interviews she would relate to her audience by saying that she is the same person she has always been but that she is experiencing growth and change (Seventeen 120). This dramatic and controversial change caused countless media outlets issue stories about Miley Cyrus. Just like many times before, she found a way to engage her audience and gain publicity. After gaining the attention of millions, Miley dropped her Bangerz album, introducing the new Miley Cyrus; she gained top charts and sales of over a million dollars (Caulfield 57). Although, Miley’s transition seemed authentic, in reality she had been working on Bangerz since early 2012 and used her public controversies to gain attention to boost her album sales. Meaning most of this dramatic change in star text was really about gaining a large audience and buyers. The success of her album and career has proven how successful she is using controversial branding to gain a wider audience and connect with her past fans. Utilizing her evolution gave her the ability to coincide her past market and grow her audience by targeting the pop/hip-hop genre that her targeted age group of listeners were interacting with. Using her very controversial and even negative backlash from media users, gave her free publicity and a wider audience’s attention. Just like in previous years she used the ability of shocking her listeners to actually engage and relate back to them. Cosmopolitan wrote an in depth article about how what she 's doing now is not what people expect from her allowing her to grab the attention of media sources everywhere, creating herself a true moment that represents a rebirth of her character (72). Her ability to shape her star text has catapulted her career to a whole new level of success by being known and followed by mass media viewers. Music celebrities like Cyrus must find ways to keep up with the wants and needs of their audiences. If they are unable to keep people invested they will not make the cut in the ever evolving music industry and in result will be unsuccessful. Miley Cyrus’s timing of her calculated image change proves that she has used her star text as a way to continually stay relevant and engaging to her audiences.
