Miles Parsons: A Modern Day Hero

Almost every man will be found to have some hero or other, living or dead, whose character he endeavors to assume, and whose performances he labors to equal (Scheske). An example of modern day hero is Miles Parsons. Miles Parsons has always been passionate about protecting the U.S. from terrorists. To this day, he has lived up to his dream by fighting against U.S. enemies behind a computer screen (Cannon). According to Robert Schmuhl, professor of American studies at the University of Notre Dame, “We look not only to public figures, but we look more broadly, across the culture, for the kind of values that we think are important during a time of crisis” (Cannon). First, a hero is generally a person who starts out with a dream. Typically, their dream is to help a person or a group of people. Then, the hero works their way up to reach this goal and achieves it. Achilles was the hero of Greece who conquered other cities for the sake of his people. To begin, Beowulf became a hero after he arrived Heorot to aid King Hrothgar. First, he slayed a monster by the name of Grendel who harassed the Geats. Second, he overthrew Grendel’s enraged mother for the sake of Heorot. Years later, when Beowulf became king, he lost his life after he destroyed the mighty dragon, regardless of his old age. Beowulf’s and the dragon’s death resulted from this. In a similar fashion, Achilles was a hero in the city of Greece. His most notable exploit was the slaying of the Trojan warrior, Hector. Also, he was known as a wise mentor for his cousin Patroclus. He slayed Hector in revenge for Hector killing his cousin. Finally, Achilles fought until his death for the sake of his men. As a result, Greece lost their most notable hero and lost the Trojan War. All in all, the two heroes risked a lot for their people in different ways. However, in some ways they were
