When Montag gets home from talking to Clarise for the first time, he sees Mildred and describes her saying, ‘...the life of the world ran, not touching them.”(Bradbury 11). In this scene Mildred attempts suicide due to the crushing presence of society. She represents society’s flaws in that life has no meaning without the proper knowledge to live it. The morning after the suicide attempt staged by Mildred she says, “Didn’t sleep well. Feel terrible.”(Bradbury 16). In this instance Mildred has no recollection of the previous night’s activities and thinks there was a party instead of an overdose. This proves the autonomous nature of society, Mildred not remembering means she can live a full life of “fun” devoid of responsibility.
