Mildred D. Taylor's Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry

Mildred D. Taylor’s Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, is a novel set in October of 1933 during the era of the Great Depression. The story focuses around the Logan family and their experiences as one of the many black families living in Mississippi, which was considered as one of the Confederate states in that time. It was told in Cassie Logan’s point-of-view, who was 9 years old and the only daughter of the family. The Logan Family first finds out about a burning of an African American man by a group of white people. From then on, the story progresses as Cassie soon discovers the cold truth of racism and racial segregation in Southern America during that time. After reading the book, I have found three things that are worth mentioning. Firstly, I found it interesting how Taylor used Cassie as the narrator in the novel. It had interested me because I never knew that the discrimination against black people was that horrible that some would even get killed for it. For example, in Chapter One when T.J told the Logan siblings about Mr. Berry nearly burning to death by the night men. This part of the text angered me as no one deserved to be burned to death, especially when they have not done anything wrong. After reading the book, I have realized that I could relate to the characters in some way. Even though I have not experienced the cruel hardships that they have gone through, I have had racial slurs being thrown at my face, whether it was because of my eyes or the colour of my skin. I sympathised with the characters, especially with Cassie, because I, too do not understand why we all should be valued differently based on our skin tone.
