Mike Rose I Just Wanna Be Average Analysis

Not everyone has a go-getter attitude and sometimes they need help to get started. Teachers have to take an active interest in every student and hold high expectations to help the kids reach their goals. In a personal narrative titled “I Just Wanna Be Average”, author Mike Rose makes a simple statement about the school system by declaring “students will float to the mark you set” (Rose 185). Upon reflection on my past twelve years of school experiences, I firmly believe in his idea as I have seen the differences in the levels firsthand. In advanced classes, I’ve witnessed the teachers push students to reach the high mark they’ve set. However, in the lower levels, the teachers seldom try to truly push students for high marks and they settle for average grades. As long as the student passes and doesn’t cause too much trouble they’ll be satisfied Fortunately for me, despite being in a regular type class, the teacher took the initiative and raised the bar for me. The objective was to take the respiration, breathing, and temperature of each other and each group was given a stethoscope. One by one, every member of my group failed to hear a heartbeat and count respiration from one another, except for me. Thanks to my experience in the animal hospital, I was able to quickly locate the heartbeat and breaths all at once. I used a technique where I counted beats in my head and breaths on my fingers, so I acquired the data quickly and effectively. Everyone was astounded and asked me to teach them, which I accepted wholeheartedly. I’ve become more communicative and as a result, I can better understand and help others which will serve me well as I grow
