Mike Markel writes in chapter four “Analyzing Your Audience and Purpose,” from the textbook Practical Strategies For Technical Communication, that it is important to know both the audience and the purpose for which the document is being written. The first thing that he said needs to be done is to understand the audience and purpose. Knowing who the audience is will determine what is talked about in the document. Make sure that the document is appealing to the audience, their interests and needs, and put it in a way that they will understand. A way to do that is by creating an audience profile sheet to help point out different characteristics of the audience.
