Mike Kelley, considered one of the most inspirational American artist of our time, with his contemporary, messy, and unusual mash-ups of thrift shop media. Kelley's art occasionally opposed the usual art world value. In his highly recognized piece More Love Hours than Can Ever Be Repaid (1987), Kelley stitched together stuffed animals and blankets purchased at a thrift shop on a canvas, to portray the symbolism that a toy, once a loving gift from a parent to a child, is now damaged and unwanted at a thrift store. Kelley also addresses the issues of teens entering adulthood and enduring unknown responsibilities by creating an altar, with overlapping half melted candles called The Wages of Sin (1987). In Switching Mary's (2004), a short film that represents traumatic repressed memories through a disturbing recreation of his high school yearbook pictures. In one of his last pieces of work Mike Kelley ventured away from his usual recycled media and decided to recreate Kandor city from the popular comic series, Superman.
