One coach who I believe exhibited positive sportsmanship was West Virginia’s girls basketball coach, Mike Carey. In the closing seconds of a game in which his team was winning, Carey instructed his player to intentionally foul Villanova senior Emily Leer, who was sitting at 999 career points. She managed to make one of the two free throws and joined the 1,000 point club in the final seconds of her final game because of the ethical decision made by coach Mike Carey. This was an extremely ethical decision and placed sportsmanship over the scoreboard. It was also especially important because the game was only separated by 5 points with seconds left on the clock in a tournament game.
