Personal Life Miep Gies (her real name was Hermine Santruschitz) was born in February 15, 1909. She was the second daughter of working class parents. In her early age, she caught many illnesses, and had to flee her homeland Vienna, Austria, and lived with the Nieuwenbergs in the Netherlands. Miep was only due for 3 months in Netherlands, but she loved her new family so much, she stayed with them permanently. She returned to Vienna at 16 to explain to her family that she wanted to stay with the people who took care of her. Her family understood, and let her go back to the Netherlands. Miep finished schooling at 18, worked for a textile company until she was 24, and married a man named Jan Gies. In 1940, though, Miep had to return to Vienna because the netherlands was bombarded by the Nazis.
