I understand that the role of a midwife is to provide care for women throughout pregnancy, labour, delivery and postnatal period, also to provide essential care to the newborn. A Midwife’s Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich examines the 1785-1812 diary of Martha Ballard, a midwife in Hallowell, Maine. Ballard composed concise daily entries that chronicle her domestic work, deliveries and nursing, as well as community events. These entries, coupled with Ulrich’s extensive archival research, show the complexity of the female economy and its interactions with the mercantile economy of the late 18th century. Ulrich presents the masculine and feminine economic interactions through the analogy of a checkered cloth. As the weaver wove together white and blue thread, squares of white, blue, and intermixed squares emerged.…

The study of medicine has evolved over thousands of years from something of an enigma governed by religious spheres to the highly specialized science of preventing, treating, and curing diseases of the human body. While my interest in becoming a physician did begin with a love of natural sciences, it has, like the study of medicine, evolved into something much larger than topics covered in my general biology courses. I want to work with people on managing their conditions, learn from doctors before me as well as patients, and be a positive influence despite often-negative diagnoses. Individuals all have different reasons for wanting to attend medical school, but I believe that we are either called to practice medicine or we are not. I am drawn…

Midwives provide many more birth options than traditional doctors do, they are able to perform the birth in the comfort of your own home, in a hospital setting, in care centers, or a midwife-led unit. With having these options available, mothers may not be undergoing as much stress. Another great factor when considering a midwife is the constant one-on-one care they provide their patients with. As research proves, “Midwives typically spend more one-on-one time interacting with their patients than a physician can during appointments and prenatal visits, and can provide more hands-on support during labor, birth and postpartum,” (livescience.com). It is very important to offer as much care for patients as midwives do, because it is very beneficial in the overall health of the mother as well as their baby.…
