What inspired my interest into becoming a midwife was when my sister was pregnant with her first child. I would attend clinic appointments and was fascinated when I heard the heartbeat of her unborn baby. I supported her throughout the pregnancy and was there at birth. I have learnt how their roles are varied and differ. I am always engrossed when I hear them talking about challenging situations, such as premature or stillborn babies. I have discussed the qualities needed to be a good midwife, such as being sympathetic, caring, calm and approachable so patients can speak openly with their midwife.
My work experience at Manchester Pregnancy Advisory gave me numerous skills in working with young adults, who were in vulnerable situations. This experience highlighted how working with those in a health and social care setting can be very challenging, but at the same time extremely rewarding. Working with a variety of clients both young and old taught me vital, transferable skills such as communication (I can speak Urdu and Punjabi as well as English, patience care and respect for clients in my care.
Working in a variety of healthcare settings and due to the unpredictable nature of care, I have learnt to put my own opinions aside and focus on the needs and beliefs of the patients. I am also able to prioritise and be flexible in my work and change the order I do things according to priority. I enjoy the fact that no one day is the same and I look forward to this challenge in
