As I see the sun rises up, hear the birds’ chirps, and hear the chickens utters a loud, harsh noise. It’s a new day and another day in the farm in Oriental Mindoro. As I got up from bed, I thought of how I should spend my last day here with my family. I then decided to head downstairs and I could immediately overhear loud conversations and then I saw my brothers and sisters as they prepare the table and gather around the table. As I sat down at the corner of the table, we started recalling our childhood memories.…
The purpose of this essay is to reflect on and discuss midwifery continuity of care and my personal experience of participating in the Continuity of Care Experience. This essay will evaluate benefits and challenges of continuity of care and I will provide details of my personal experience. I will relate this to professional codes and standards for midwifery care in Australia and reflect on what I have learned that I will take with me into my future practice as a midwife working within a continuity of care model. Midwifery continuity of care is encompassed in the framework of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Board’s National competency standards for the midwife (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), 2006). The overarching framework…
Martha Ballard was a woman who was really just a normal woman in eighteenth century New England. She was ordinary and extraordinary at the same time. In A Midwife’s Tale, a book by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, Martha served Hallowell, Maine as a midwife. She kept a diary of her life and exploits. This diary was used as a window into the world of Martha Ballard and her experiences in life.…
There are many factors that can be analyzed in order to understand early colonial America -- the era’s growth of trade, its religious practices, its medicinal practices, or its colonists’ interpersonal and professional relationships with one another. In Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s monograph, A Midwife’s Tale, Martha Ballard’s diary explores all of these factors. One crucial factor of understanding colonial America is through understanding the gender roles of colonial women and their influences on the colonies. Although women were seen as insignificant in colonial America, nevertheless Ulrich’s monograph is important to our comprehension of the gender roles of the era because it demonstrates how women’s roles in society, as well as their relationships…

Nancy is nine months pregnant and is quickly taken to the hospital after her water breaks. Upon arrival at the hospital she is triaged and placed in a room. The doctor comes in and asks Nancy what kind of pain management she wants during the delivery. Nancy has researched the different options before coming to the hospital but was still unsure about what to choose. She knew an epidural was the most common option but like with all medication side effects are very common which made her nervous they would affect the delivery and/or her child.…
Since neighbor-woman midwives were limited in number, it will not be a surprise when trained midwives replace them; families would only go to neighbor-woman midwives if they could not find a trained professional. Apprentice-trained midwives are those who received training by more experienced practitioners. Since some physicians were not able to handle some situations alone, midwives were taught new techniques. Even though apprentice-trained was common, it “was not a major route to the profession for Milwaukee midwives” (Borst, pg. 20); there was a decline in apprentice training in the twentieth century. School-trained midwives were organized by physicians and local midwives; it was to give a more structured environment.…
Through out this documentary I learned and was surprised about a lot of what was going on in the video. I myself do not have children an I haven't been around anyone close to me having to make the decision whether to go to the hospital or go to a birthing center/ midwife. Too be honest I rarely ever thought about the various options women had when talking about giving birth. I always thought I would go to the hospital and get all the medication I could to decrease the pain but after watching this video my opinion and plan did a full 360. I was very surprised to hear all the various evidences supporting why women should go to a midwife rather than an OBGYN.…
131). Nurses play a pivotal role in assessing risks, providing interventions, encouraging health promoting behaviors, assuring patient participation and referring to specialists where indicated to improve both maternal and fetal outcomes (Hurst & Linton, 2015; Sanders, 2009). The areas of concern with respect to preconception care should be considered at every office visit. Freda (2006) advocates that preconception care is best conducted when integrated into primary health care rather than as a separate entity, considering almost half of all pregnancies are unplanned. A lack of standards and guidelines related to inclusive preconception care results in gaps of care and missed opportunities for intervention.…
