Actually, I am still in the most challenging academic course I have taken to date, AP United States History (APUSH). APUSH has been difficult for me due to the fact that I had very little knowledge of US history preceding my enrollment in the class. Furthermore, prior to this class I had never really had to study extensively to maintain high marks. APUSH has been different. Having little knowledge of this material, I have had to spend much more time studying.…

Understanding that the way students learned in high school will not cut it in college because there is a higher expectation. The advice I would give to a prospective student starting in college is the information given to us in the beginning of chapter zero (0). First, determine which study methods works best for the individual (verbal, visual, auditory, and/or action). Secondly, time management by balancing school, work and play, and avoid procrastination at all cost. Thirdly, you need to be prepared for class, meaning read the textbook and take notes that you are able to understand.…

On the midterm test, covering chapters 1 - 6, I earned a score of 88/100, which is a B. Part of the reason I received this grade is how I prepared for this test. My main concern was learning the vocabulary I expected to see on the test. I focused on this because I knew it made up a majority of the test, 80% to be exact. To study for the vocab, I created an online study guide with the terms and definitions on the website, quizlet. I studied this set for a couple days till I became very confident in my abilities to recognize and define the 40+ terms.…

Having mandatory testing in high school can cause trouble, for students who are trying to get their high school diploma. However, I have never had any concerns about mandatory testing during my past high school years, in fact I feel like it pressured me to learn what I needed to learn. Necessary testing also helped me acknowledge my learning level, and it kept an organized agenda of what we should learn in class. The testing environment did not concern me either, to be honest it helped me concentrated and it kept me on task. The pressure of state testing benefited me because the thought of having a final test at the end of the year that made want to learn the material instead of just sitting in the classroom occupying a seat.…
I take a lot of notes in most of my lectures so when I am studying for an exam I can see what topics the professor focused a lot on. This helps me see what main points I need to study and what minor points I can skim over. I used this skill on my last exam and it helped me get a better grade than I expected. Looking at the test questions for clues helps me understand what the question is focusing on so I can remember the exact topic and hopefully pick the correct answer. I have used this skill throughout high school and even in college.…
If I was not for those classes requiring me to learn how to study and prepare for tests, I wouldn’t be as well off as I am now. High schools should have workshops or classes about the different ways to study and what would work best for certain people. A work shop class about how to study would be beneficial to students – it would teach multiple ways that the student could study based on what would work better for them. I had to learn on my own my senior year of high school, but the way I study is I write everything over and over and over until I can picture my notes in my head. Quizlet is also a great…
