Midsummer Night's Dream Smooth

“The course of true love never did run smooth.” This is a quote said by Lysander in the play Midsummer Nights Dream. In this quote, Lysander is describing how love is not always easy. There will be road bumps and difficulties to lead to happiness. In the play, there are many situations where love does not run smooth. There are three couples that are good examples. The couples being Lysander and Hermia, Demetrius and Helena, and Titania and Oberon. The first couple that demonstrates this quote are Lysander and Hermia. Lysander and Hermia love each other and are wanting to get married, although Egeus, Hermia’s father, declares her to marry Demetrius. “The worst that may befall me in this case If I refuse to wed Demetrius.”(Shakespeare 3) Hermia replies this in act one referring to her dad. Helena is in love with Demetrius, and he likes the idea of marrying Hermia. He does not like Helena for the reason that she is annoying. In the beginning, he only talked to her because she was good looking. In act two, Robing Goodfellow, a tricky fairy from the woods, takes the juice of a flower powered by cupid. The flower is put into a persons eyes while sleeping and when woken they fall in love with the first thing they see. Robin Goodfellow decides to put the juice in Demetrius’ eyes. The first person he seeks is Helena. Helena was not sure about is at first. She thought the Demetrius was simply mocking her. Later on the two of them get married and Demetrius never gets taken off of his love spell from the flower. They started of as an unhealthy relationship, but the flower did its wonders for this
