In the beginning of the play, Egeus presents his complaint to Theseus, as a father who, by law, has the right to select his daughter's spouse. Egeus believes that Lysander has turned Hermia against his will and has made her a disobedient daughter. Egeus is fond of Demetrius and prefers him over Lysander. Egeus would not have acted this way if he did not love his daughter and want the best for her. In 1.1.27, Egeus goes on to explain, "This man hath bewitched the bosom of my child." He continues in 1.1.32 and says, "And stol'n the impression of her fantasy" (Bevington, 2014, p. 47). This is where he is saying Lysander has brainwashed Hermia. Often parents show their love in ways such as being overly protective and can act irrational when the child goes against the parent's wishes.
