Saleem Sinai is the narrator and the main character of the novel Midnight’s Children. He grows up in India, in a normal, Muslim family who have enough money to get him educated. One thing that is not normal, is that he is born at the exact moment of India’s independence. Because Saleem was born at this exact moment, he has a couple of gifts. For instance, he could convoke the Midnight’s Children; a group of children who are all born around India’s Independence. From his birth to his death is Saleem fully connected to India. The first argument is about Saleem’s mixed blood and Saleem’s relationship with different people that have contrasting religions. Saleem has an English father and an Indian mother, which demonstrates India and their colonial history. His Muslim adoptive parents, Catholic baby-sitter and Hindi-mother represent the variety of religions in India. Saleem’s growth is the main subject for the second argument. He was born at the same time as India gained its independence and grows at the same time as India was setting up its five-year plan. The third and last argument is about Saleem’s death. Saleem dies at his thirty-one birthday and decomposes into 630 million pieces of dust.
